10 Songs To Blast On The First Day Of School

Published: August 25, 2015

Back To School Playlist Main

The first day of school is right around the corner (we know, we know, don’t shoot the messenger) and that means it’s time to get pumped up! Smell ya later summer, school is gonna be awesome! This is an example of reverse psychology, something you may learn about in class this year.

The first day of school can be, in a word, terrifying, but with the right playlist you can walk in feeling like you own the place. Or a least, walk in feeling like you can make it to the final bell. They’re both wins.

1. Fight Song, Rachel Platten
Rachel Platten’s break out single has been the feel-good anthem of the summer, so why not make it your feel-good anthem of the first day of school?

2. Cheerleader, OMI
Whether you’re actually trying out for the cheer squad or using this song as a reminder that everyone needs a cheerleader every now and again, the song has a positive, “don’t let the first day get you down”-vibe. Plus, it sounds like summer and we’re not ready to let that feeling go.

3. Love Myself, Hailee Steinfeld
Actress Hailee Steinfeld recently made her debut on the pop charts with one of the most self-affirming songs of the year. Start your first day (and every day) of school looking into the mirror, standing very still, and then singing “I love myself” at the top of your lungs. The rest should take care of itself.

4. We’re Going Be Friends, The White Stripes
Whether it’s the kid wearing a sweet band t-shirt or someone you meet in chess club, finding a new friend on the first day of school is a big win. And if you don’t, no worries. There’s always day two.

5. Shake It Off, Taylor Swift
Didn’t get a good locker assignment? Don’t have class with any of your friends? Worried you won’t make the volleyball team? Terrified you’ll throw up during your first presentation? Shake, shake, shake, shake it off.

6. Here, Aleesia Cara
Newcomer Aleesia Cara gave the introverts of the world an anthem with her melodic track Here, describing what it feels like to be at a party and not feel like being a boy or girl gone wild. Like parties, school may also prompt the question, “what am I doing here?” more than a few times. It happens to all of us.

7. Team, Lorde
Speaking of not being alone, Lorde totally gets teens, probably because she’s cool with being one. If you can find your own “team” at school, that’s pretty awesome.

8. Unbreakable Smile, Tori Kelly
School in theory isn’t designed to break students, but pressure from friends, other students, teachers, midterms, and more definitely add up. Keeping a positive attitude is half the battle. The other half involves a lot of studying. Bleh.

9. Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae), Silento
Sometimes it just feels really good to do a choreographed dance.

10. Cool For The Summer, Demi Lovato
We know, we know, a new school year means that summer is officially over. Let’s just listen to this one more time.
