Why Your Summer Plans Should Include Festival d’été de Québec

Published: April 24, 2017

If you’re like us, you make your predictions throughout the Winter and patiently wait for the turn of the New Year for your favourite festival to reveal their lineup. However each year you’re faced with the same dilemma of choosing one lineup over another because of the variance of one headlining artist. The choice then comes down to proximity or the unique aesthetic of a festival. ‘Should we party in the desert, on a farm or at the base of a mountain?’

The explosion of festival culture has given us access to hundreds of music festivals in North America alone and we can’t complain because no matter what it’ll be a good party.  The concern is that each year we stray further and further away from the true essence of what music festivals are grounded in… the music.

This year we heard more about what Selena Gomez and The Weeknd wore for their Coachella date night than we did about the actual performances. Sure the culture is great and kudos to you if you’re really into “Weemez” (we just made that up) but it’s time to get back to the music.

Every year Festival d'été de Québec (FEQ) strives to offer acts that push limits, bands that make you want to travel across the country for and a lineup that will please you, your mom, your grandpa and your crazy Metalhead uncle. This year is no different. FEQ has put forth one of their most eclectic and hard hitting lineups to date, which is no surprise as they have 50 years of experience doing it. This year they reminded us why we go to music festivals, not only to enjoy the grandiose performance of our favourite artist but to check out acts that we aren’t normally exposed to or are not performing anywhere else. The festival pulled from all genres and has created 11 straight days of music that everyone can enjoy.

Here are just a few of the acts we are most excited to see at FEQ this year.

DJ Shadow

DJ Shadow is one of the most acclaimed producers and DJs of our time.  Many consider him an architect of sound and it shows in his set as he pulls influences from all genres building innovative tracks.

Amadou and Mariam

Amadou and Mariam are a musical duo from Mali.  Their beautiful and festive sounds are created through influences of music from around the world. They have performed with such artists as Dave Gilmour (from Pink Floyd) and Manu Chao and have helped popularize the Afro-Blues genre.

Flume

Flume burst on to the scene a little less than 5 years ago at only 20 years old. He is an Australian Producer/ DJ who’s hit song Never Be Like You featuring Canadian singer Kai contributed to bringing electro-pop back to the charts.

Kendrick Lamar

FEQ is 1 of 2 Canadian dates announced by the rapper. His latest release Damn. has been one of the most anticipated and highly praised hip hop albums released recently.

The Who

The Who have only scheduled one date in Canada and that is at FEQ .  The Rock legends are one of the most influential bands to date. They will bring their classic and awe-inspiring performance to the Plains of Abraham on July 13th.

 L’ORCHESTRE D’HOMMES-ORCHESTRES

Also known as LODHO, this act is much different than those preceding it. Their performance is part of the Canada 150 celebrations and they will be performing each day between 6pm and 8pm. The artists come together to create a sound and a performance that is unique to the time and audience around them.  They use props and objects in their environment to produce music that is innovative, intelligent and sometimes just disorderly and fun.

Like we said these are just a few of the acts we are excited to see and trust us when we say this list could go on forever.  We didn't even get to Muse, Metallica, Gorillaz and Men Without Hats... no joke you can do the Safety Dance this summer. If you want to check out more, the full lineup and schedule can be found here.

From July 6-16th Québec City will unite music lovers. They will bring us back to the true sense of a music festival, which is to explore new genres, discover great artists and to listen and watch remarkable performances.
