Born in Nigeria, jazz pianist Thompson Egbo-Egbo immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of four. He began playing piano shortly afterwards. His fourth album A New Standard was released this past January. While it isn’t Thompson’s debut, it is the first studio record with group members Jeff Halischuk (drums) and Randall Hall (bass). A New Standard also marks Thompson’s first release under the Entertainment One Music banner.
Brigitte Truong spoke to the musician in his “playground”, uptown piano store Paul Hahn & Co. The pair covered his genre defying music, plus Thompson showed Brigitte a few tricks to getting started on the keys.
