The Tragically Hip’s last tour was one of the highest-grossing shows worldwide

Published: September 22, 2016

Here's another indication of just how crazy Canada went for the Tragically Hip's Man Machine Poem tour. The 15-date outing that never left Canadian soil (and never made it east of Ottawa) was named the seventh highest-earning summer tour globally based on average box office grosses.

That's more than stadium regs like Bieber or Rihanna or Rod Stewart all whom fall behind the Kingston band on tracking agency Pollstar's chart of summer concert earnings worldwide.

Tracked over 10 tour stops from July to August, the Tragically Hip generated an average of $1.85 million USD per show.

The Man Machine Poem tour's ticket sales helped raise more than $1 million for brain cancer research, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Sunnybrook Foundation announced earlier this week.

And though it might be the end for the Hip, Gord Downie has announced two October concerts in support of his Secret Path project — an album, an animated film and a graphic novel honouring Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old Ojibway boy who died from exposure and hunger after fleeing a residential school near Kenora, Ontario in 1966.
