The Pirate Bay’s cofounder says he’s planning to sue every major record label

Published: June 23, 2016

The Pirate Bay co-founder, thorn in the side of the music industry, and troll extraordinaire Peter Sunde, the man who tried to bankrupt the recording powers with a file-copying machine, is preparing a lawsuit against the Big Four labels for damaging his reputation.

Last week, the Helsinki District Court ordered Sunde to pay €350,000 (about $507K CAD) to Sony Music Entertainment Finland, Universal Music, Warner Music and EMI Finland for music shared illegally through The Pirate Bay. He'll have to pay an additional €1,000,000 fine, the court said, if the infringements continue in the future. Which is peculiar because Sunde hasn't had anything to do with The Pirate Bay for about 10 years.

Sunde didn't even know about the Finnish case until after the verdict was handed down, he told TorrentFreak, suggesting that he was never properly served. At any rate, he's decided to respond with a lawsuit of his own.

“I’m going to sue them for damage against my good name and stealing a lot of time from me,” he says. “I’m a public person in Finland and they’re calling me a criminal when they KNOW I’m not involved in what they’re suing me for. It’s defamation.”

"Attacking has always been my best defense," he says, "and I’m going to demand what I’m owed finally.” We're going to bet it's not the easy W that Sunde says it is, but you have to admire his conviction. Like literally, he already did jail time for this stuff.
