The MTV VMAs will give Kanye West four minutes to do whatever he wants

Published: August 25, 2016

The last time Kanye West took the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards, accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award in 2015, he led the audience on a 10-minute oratorial odyssey culminating with the announcement that he'd run for president in 2020.

MTV understands that Kanye is at his best — and so are ratings — when he's unbridled. So, TMZ reports, VMA producers are giving West four primetime, globally televised minutes to do whatever he wants.

There aren't any strings. The powers at MTV are giving Kanye four minutes to do with "as he pleases," a source close to production told TMZ. "He can rap, sing, dance or even just stay silent... and show producers are totally clueless which door he'll pick."

Maybe he'll play a revised "Famous" where he acknowledges that Taylor Swift earned her fame by her own talent and hard work. Maybe he'll talk about saving the world through inexpensive and ultra accessible Swedish furniture, or, conversely, crazy expensive and mostly inaccessible knit sneakers. Maybe he'll saw a woman in half. Maybe he'll perform a dramatic reading of the voice-over from the closing scene of American Beauty.

It is 240 seconds of pure possibility. And there is nothing more tantalizing than possibility.

The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards air Sunday, August 28 at 9pm ET.
