Soul: A Coming of Age Story

Published: March 28, 2017

Cold Specks

Move over Buble, Cold Specks inspires bone chilling vocals. A female Canadian crooner for the ages - Al Spx’s self-proclaimed "doom soul" perfectly describes the fusion of folk and Gothic gospel she concocts.

Gallant

We personally believe talking to yourself is a sign of brilliance. Christopher Gallant, better known as Gallant proves this tenfold with his soliloquy. The masterful mind sprouted up in Maryland and began his recording career in the halls of middle school by penning his teenage turmoil.

P.S.: "Weight in Gold"! 'Nuff said. Spotify that track, ASAP.

Lion Babe

Lion Babe is not a singular woman show - Hands down, the best cover of She's a Lady comes to us in the form of duo LION BABE comprised of lead singer Jillian Hervey and Lucas Goodman on keys.

Fun Fact: Lion Babe’s Jillian Hervey’s mum is actress Vanessa Williams.

Nao

Neo Jessica Joshua AKA Nao coined the term 'wonky funk' to describe her uber-cool songstress style. NAO's Intro (Like Velvet) is 40ish seconds of impassioned lyrical genius. This briefest introduction to the Brit's album is an amuse-bouche of music. It explodes with flavour the second it hits your senses. You'll be ordering seconds fo sho!

Leon Bridges

He makes us want to be/find a "Better Man". The 26 year old youngin’ from Fort Worth Texas has been likened to the great soulsters of the 50s and 60s. He is by far and away a fave here at the Chart office.

Ibeyi

Ibeyi aren't the only ones lost in their minds - the pair of French-Cuban twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz have us losing our mental cognitive functionality too. The modern day Mary-Kate and Ashley of the music scene were born into a melodic family. Their dearly departed patriarch was renown percussionist Anga Diaz.

Kwabs

London-based neo-soul singer Kwabs born Kwabena Sarkodee Adjepong in 1990 went from covering tunes on YouTube to a contract with Atlantic in a few miniscule years.

He spent part of his childhood in the foster care system growing up on a combo of soul, electronica, rock, classical and jazz. Run, don't "Walk" to your search engine and type: KWABS. You'll thank us!
