For attentive, fast-acting Nirvana fans, 2015 has been a windfall of "new" recordings. A few weeks ago, there was that 10-song SoundCloud playlist of unheard material, which was promptly taken down. And on its heels, a demo tape surfaced from Fecal Matter, Cobain's pre-Nirvana band with The Melvins' Dale Crover, which also disappeared quickly. Now, dropped anonymously on Reddit yesterday, a zip containing two demos — the first, "Do Re Mi," packaged alongside a previously unreleased 9-minute noise jam titled "E-Coli."
Nobody's too certain when this was made (the YouTube uploader suggests '93 or '94). We don't know who's playing what. There are two guitars. Does that mean Pat Smear's on this one? That would jibe with the timeline. But some commenters wonder if, judging by the sound, it was recorded in the same '92 session that yielded the "Scentless Apprentice" demo. Just another case for the sleuths. Me? I'll just bang along a bit.
