RAPID FIRE: Denzel Curry on what his tombstone will say

Published: September 23, 2016

Rapid Fire gets our favourite artists to answer hard-hitting questions about their childhood, imagination, and the future, as fast as they can before our non-existent timer runs out.

Florida's Denzel Curry has been on a long journey to get where he is now. It started back in elementary school when a spark went off inside of him with poetry. That later translated into rapping in the sixth grade, followed by spending time at a local Boys & Girls Club, where he'd start rap battles with his peers. After a few mixtapes, his debut album Nostalgic 64 landed to widespread acclaim. Then, in 2016, Denzel decided now was the time to show people who he really was with his sophomore album Imperial.

When I met Denzel, he had just arrived in Toronto. Within a few minutes he was bouncing off the walls, almost literally. After four takes at an intro, some of which involved freestyling, the interview began, and damn did he ever nail it. We've not had someone like Denzel on Rapid Fire since Raury, where they truly take the series' name to heart. I'll place bets that you won't make it further than the first question without laughing. He lists what he wants his tombstone to say, his greatest gift in life, why he wants to be Samuel L. Jackson and much more.

Denzel Curry's new album Imperial is out now.
