On December 19, 2015, Toronto noise rock trio Several Futures performed a live improvisation to accompany a Super 8 mashup by film artist Jonathan Culp at the Niagara Artists Centre in St. Catharines. The collaborative work was called A New Place to Dwell.
Projected on three 50-year-old Technicolor loop projectors, Culp led what the NAC describes as a "kinetic journey through the 20th century camera’s gaze," using dozens of found film clips from his personal collection — horror flicks through home videos. Loosely structured into five movements, Several Futures interpreted the work musically, expressing its building intensity, first in guitar scratches and cymbal wash, then in crashing post-rock.
The performance was recorded and will be released September 6 as A New Place to Dwell. Several Futures have shared an advance stream of the album with Chart Attack. To celebrate its release, Several Futures and Culp will remount A New Place to Dwell on September 13 at Array Space in Toronto. You'll find show details below the stream.
