FULL SCREEN: The Weeknd is fire, Fake Palms stalk a bballin’ panda bear

Published: July 28, 2015
Full Screen is our rumination on the remarkable music videos of the day. Today, The Weeknd's no longer heating up, Fake Palms get freaky with a panda, Mas Ysa takes a cinematic journey.

The Weeknd, "I Can't Feel My Face"

The Weeknd’s success makes me really happy. Even if you don't like his newfound distance from his shadowy cryptic persona, it's hard not to feel proud. He’s a Scarborough kid turned international headliner and he’s only getting better. Even if it's poppier and funkier than his breakout bleak and debauched tales of drugs, money and women, “I Can't Feel My Face" is classic Abel Tesfaye. His lyrics tease numbness, his croons soar, and his guardian devil from the "King of The Fall" video even watches from the audience. Except Abel’s biggest desire is greatness. You can see it when his Michael Jackson dance moves get caught in flames and win over the toughest crowd ever. - Ebyan Abdigir

Fake Palms, "Sparkles"

YouTube Video

Toronto post-punks Fake Palms make their screen debut with an Allison Johnston-directed clip for the darkened, serpentine pop ditty "Sparkles." Have you ever took notice of somebody, maybe walking down the street or riding in the subway, and then suddenly, you see them everywhere? Me neither. But it sure sounds sinister (even if that stranger were dressed in a giant panda bear suit — and especially so if they didn't take the thing off to play basketball. Creep!) Thankfully, the video ends with our protagonist dutifully removing the head of the interloper. - Chris Hampton

Fake Palms' self-titled debut is out August 28 on Buzz Records.

Mas Ysa, "Margarita"

"Margarita" brings Mas Ysa on a cinematic journey through bleak volcanic remnants, the burning reds of dusted hills, lush lime green mountains, and crisp sky blue ocean water in Hawaii. His all white attire contrasts with the saturated wilderness. The human powers from above and below synchronize their minds together, harness the energy of the sun, and work together, to save the mysterious floating body. - Ryan Parker

Mas Ysa’s debut album Seraph is out now on Downtown Records.
