We dive into the story of the woman behind Frankenstein with the stars of Mary Shelley: Elle Fanning, Douglas Booth and Bel Powley. The period piece is a bio-pic of author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, who is best known for her gothic novel Frankenstein.

Directed by Haifaa Al Mansour, the film explores the years of Mary’s life that led to the publication of Frankenstein. From running away with her step-sister Claire (Bel Powely) in pursuit of a then married poet, Percy Shelley (Douglas Booth), at 16, to eventually writing and publishing Frankenstein at the age of 20. According to Elle Fanning the film is an inspiring look at womanhood. Mary Shelley also features Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) Hugh O’Conor (X-Men Apocalypse) and Tom Sturridge as another famous writer, Lord Byron.

@BrigitteTruong spoke to the cast of up and comers about the period piece, Mary’s relevance today and the lasting impact of her work.
Mary Shelley is rated PG and hits select Canadian theatres this summer:

  • July 20 – Montreal (Forum), Vancouver (Fifth Ave)
  • July 27 – Edmonton (Princess), Regina (Rainbow Regina), Saskatoon (Roxy), Victoria (Vic Theatre)
