Choir! Choir! Choir! sings “Ahead by a Century” in a touching tribute Gord Downie

Published: May 27, 2016

Lately, the heartaches have been heavy and many. It's comforting to see people get together and turn that shared hurt into celebration. Toronto's open-invite singing group Choir! Choir! Choir! have become a trusty outlet for the music lovers' collective grief and gratitude.

At the beginning of the month, they gathered 1,999 people at Massey Hall to perform "When Doves Cry." Earlier in the year, they arranged a 500-person rendition of "Space Oddity."

On Wednesday, after we'd just learned that Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip has terminal cancer, they turned their weekly meeting into a tribute.

The group — maybe 150 singers — dusted off their cover of "Ahead by a Century" from The Tragically Hip's 1996 album Trouble at the Henhouse.

A song that lives immortally in campfire sing-alongs and lighter-up live performances, it's the perfect choice for a Choir! Choir! Choir! toast. It's a loving display for a man who's made it his life's mission to tell distinctly Canadian stories. Give him the Order of Canada already.
