Duran Duran Confirms John Frusciantes Involvement on Upcoming Album

Published: April 23, 2014

Rumors have been swirling for the last few days that none other than Mr. John Frusciante would be involved with Duran Duran’s upcoming album. While it’s certainly a weird combination, it has officially moved on from rumor status with a confirmation coming directly from Duran Duran.

The 80s icons sent out a press release moments ago declaring their excitement at working with the former Pepper and all-around guitar wizard. Here’s their brief statement:

“April 23rd, 2014

We were holding this exciting news because we were hoping to give you full details when we announced, but as word has leaked out, catching us rather off guard, we wanted to confirm yes its true, the extraordinarily talented John Frusciante has indeed been doing some work from his home base in California on our new album. The tracks have been going back and forth via the internet, and we are thrilled with the results. We are all such big fans of Johns work and are honoured to have him adding his magic to the record! There are no current plans for John to tour with us, but his guitars sound incredible on the tracks.

Hoping to have more news for you soon.

- Simon, John, Nick & Roger”

This is sure to cause fans of the guitarist some confusion, as there is very little overlap in sound and style. Previous Duran Duran collaborations have led to sketchy releases including 2007′s largely (and deservedly) ignored effort Red Carpet Massacre, which featured Timbaland and Justin Timberlake with little benefit for any involved party.

When the band stepped up to the plate with producer Mark Ronson for 2012′s All You Need Is Now, however, things were back in working order and the band returned to the sound that propelled them to stardom back in the 80s. Given how solid that LP was, fans of either Frusciante or the band are most assuredly going to be in for a treat. Considering Mark Ronson is once again set to produce the new record, our ears are certainly excited to see what the outcome of this weirdness will be.

It is important to note that the band says there are currently no plans for the guitarist to join them on tour. We’ve caught them a few times over the last few years, including a stellar show back in 2012 which proved the band still delivers live. They may not need Frusciante in a live setting, but if he’s on the record… well, there are few guitarists capable of playing the way he does. Maybe things will change and he’ll join the guys on the road.

There is very little other information circulating at this time, but feel free to check out either DuranDuran.com or JohnFrusciante.com and see what develops.
