Bernie Worrell, legendary keyboardist for Parliament-Funkadelic has died from lung cancer at the age of 72. Worrell's death was confirmed by his family on his Facebook page.
"At 11:54, June 24, 2016, Bernie transitioned Home to The Great Spirit," Worrell's wife wrote. "Rest in peace, my love -- you definitely made the world a better place. Till we meet again, vaya con Dios."
Worrell had been diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer earlier this year and had been conducting online fundraising for his medical expenses.
Worrell, nicknamed the Wizard of Woo, was a key member of George Clinton's p-funk universe and helped develop the collective's pioneering sound through the early use of the Moog keyboard.
Worrell appeared on many seminal p-funk albums including their stretch of 1970s recordings that included Mothership Connection and Maggot Brain.
Aside from his long musical collaborations with Clinton, Worrell also worked with Talking Heads during the 1980s and appeared in their acclaimed film, Stop Making Sense.
Worrell was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
