'Trainspotting' Author Irvine Welsh Is Writing a TV Series About Acid House

Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh is currently enjoying a resurgence of his most famous novel thanks to Danny Boyle's film sequel T2: Trainspotting (which was loosely based on Welsh's follow-up novel Porno). For an upcoming project, though, Welsh will be switching his focus from Edinburgh's seediest to the UK acid house movement of the late '80s.
 
Alongside screenwriter Dean Cavanagh, Welsh is writing a new TV series titled Ibiza87 that serves as an origin story for Britain's rave scene. It will explore the early days of the movement and seminal figures like club owners Nicky Holloway, Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling — all three of whom have signed on to contribute to the project. The show will take viewers through the trio's famed trip to Ibiza in 1987, right into the ecstasy-fuelled Second Summer of Love.
 
"The house music scene and most importantly, the friendships made, the adventures had and crazy tales swapped, have been a pivotal part of our lives over the years," Welsh explained in a statement. "Those beats, pills and travels (whether to the other side of the world or across the town) shaped a generation, and the opportunity to construct a drama within this backdrop is a dream come true."
 
Holloway, Oakenfold and Rampling, meanwhile, will curate the soundtrack to the series — though details about exactly what music will be included have yet to be revealed.
 
"I'm very excited about this project," Oakenfold said in a statement. "As you know, it ties in with the 30-year anniversary of our trip to Ibiza and what followed thereafter; the birth of the dance music club and festival scene as we know it today. It's great to celebrate with this project as well as my world tour this year which is about just that, three generations of dance music."
 
A press release has billed the TV project as "the missing link between 24 Hour Party People and Straight Outta Compton."
 
An official release date for Ibiza87 hasn't been set.
