Toronto performance venue the Sony Centre is no stranger to name changes, and it's about to get another one. The downtown facility will be rebranded as Meridian Hall beginning later this year.

The change comes after the expiration of Sony's 10-year contract with the building. The electronic company initially purchased the naming rights in 2007 for $10 million.

Ontario's largest credit union, Meridian, has now entered into a $30.75 million, 15-year deal with the downtown venue. It will officially be renamed Meridian Hall as of September 15.

The 1,200 capacity venue first opened as the O'Keefe Centre in 1960, and was later renamed the Hummingbird Centre in 1996.

This marks the latest in a string of corporate overhauls of Toronto performance spaces, following recent switches to Budweiser Stage (formerly Molson Amphitheatre), Scotiabank Arena (formerly the Air Canada Centre) and Coca-Cola Coliseum (formerly Ricoh Coliseum).
