Yungblud And Halsey Covered Death Cab For Cutie And Our Emo Hearts Are Broken

Published: February 21, 2019

Yungblud and Halsey are changing the face of emo.

Not content to leave it in the hands of a thousand pale Panic At The Disco imitators, the two musicians have mastered their own revived directions for the genre, young Brit Yungblud combining it with ska, and pop crooner Halsey soaking lyrics about adversity and loneliness with lashings of trap-inflected electro beats.

Now, finally, the two genre savants have combined their forces to tackle an emo classic. Dust off your skinny jeans, load up your copy of The Nightmare Before Christmas, tell your mum that she doesn’t understand you, and fire up those “I made you a cookie but I eated it” memes, cause two titans of emo’s new wave have paid their respects to Death Cab For Cutie’s tear-soaked banger ‘I Will Follow You Into The Dark’ for Like A Version.

And guess what: their take fucken’ slaps.

Resisting the temptation to mess too much with the formula, Halsey and Yungblud have stripped back ‘I Will Follow You Into The Dark’ to its bare essentials. With the help of nothing more than a small string section and a keyboard, the two artists have found the song’s emotional core and nailed themselves there.

The cover is also a fantastic reminder of the respective vocal chops of both artists. It’s easy to forget, given the layers of production her music is covered in, that Halsey possesses an extraordinary, classically trained voice, one with the nuance and sheer emotional heft to carry Death Cab’s melodies.

The cover is another big win for triple j’s Like A Version, which has been on a bit of a roll as of late — only last week we were gifted with Denzel Curry’s incinerating version of ‘Bulls On Parade’, the Rage Against The Machine masterpiece.

The only question is, who’s gonna be next?
