Florence Welch Sang At The End Of ‘Game of Thrones’ And It Was Dramatic And Perfect

Published: April 22, 2019

If you had to compile a list of pop artists to sing the end credits theme for your show about medieval murder and dragons, Florence And The Machine would be right at the top — which is why it’s actually kinda weird that it took eight seasons for the powerhouse act to guest on an episode of Game of Thrones.

Yep, as everyone with two eyes and access to the show will know, yesterday’s episode of Game of Thrones was rounded out with Florence Welch lending her striking talents to ‘Jenny of Oldstones’, a tragic ballad of love lost that was sung in part during the episode by the perennially wet-eyed Podrick Payne.

But if the show’s co-creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had had their way, Florence And The Machine would have provided some good old fashioned atmosphere a long time ago — seven years, in fact.

Turns out that Benioff and Weiss wanted Welch to perform ‘The Rains of Castamere‘ all those years ago, but she turned them down. In her defence, she’d never actually watched the show at that stage — it was only after the offer was already off the table that she binged her way through it, and became a superfan.

Welch isn’t the first popstar to appear on the show, of course — The National ended up taking the reins on ‘Castamere’, and The Hold Steady (weirdly) covered ‘The Bear And The Maiden Fair’. Weiss and Benioff have actually confirmed that Florence will be the very last musical guest on the show, which gives ‘Jenny Oldstones’ even more of a feeling of finality and portent.

Indeed, as many fans have already pointed out, much of this season’s first two episodes have been spent filling the viewers with love for their favourite characters, and with the unmistakable feeling that absolutely everybody is about to get horribly slaughtered. ‘Jenny of Oldstones’ only added to that sinking feeling.

‘Till next week, then!
