Standon Calling Festival 2017 takes place between 27 – 30 July.

The line up of this years Festival looks fabulous again. Keith Goldhanger has a few recommendations for you that you may want to check out if you’re unaware of their existence.

Many of us have been here before and many of us return year after year to what we claim must be one of the best small festivals the UK has to offer. The names on the top of the posters will be known to a high percentage of those who turn up, dress up and dance the weekend away, but for one or two of us it’s also the inclusion of many of our favourites at the lower end of the bill that this festival always manage to treat us with, that get us a bit hot under the collar.

This is the festival where The Young Fathers played a mid-afternoon slot to a modest size crowd back in 2014. Those of us there who will never forget such glorious intensity. It was on par with the performances at the same festival early in the lives of Factory Floor back in 2010.

Florence and The Machine, Mumford and Sons, Public Service Broadcasting, Friendly Fires, John Grant and London Grammar have all appeared here previously when they were little known. There’ll be those that we still haven’t discovered yet who will no doubt turn up at Standon Calling Festival 2017 and make their first steps towards making an impression and getting us to investigate further.

GRACE JONES, ORBITAL, and CLEAN BANDIT need little introduction, but who are the bands that the festival families, the dog owners and the dressed-up party animals need to be listening to before the end of July this year then?
Who are the bands that in four year’s time may be headlining these events or appearing in some of the largest venues towns and cities around the UK have available?

Here are ten bands that get us excited before we even get to tell you all about The headliners already mentioned or SLAVES, GARY NEWMAN, EDITORS, KATE TEMPEST , KT TUNSTALL, NOTHING BUT THIEVES, !!! (CHK CHK CHK), STEVE MASON, SLOW CLUB or LAURA MVULA.

Here are some artists we really feel you need to know about who are all appearing this year that we hope you’ll be listening to for years down the line and hopefully recalling that hot warm sunny weekend when you once saw them in a field in Hertfordshire before tea time. Ten artists who we think may be seen even higher up the pecking order in a few year’s time just as those mentioned already. You may already know some of them because we have been keen to mention them already on Louder Than War over the past few months.  Seeing these bands at a festival is sometimes just a dream when we first meet them. Standon Calling Festival has managed somehow to make those dreams realities over the years. Pitch up a tent next to ours, there’s always enough space and we’ll make sure you’re at the right stages at the right time.
