Many may say that it’s obnoxious to start playing Christmas jingles before we’ve even blown out the candles inside our DIY jack-o’-lanterns. But certainly no one has expressed deep disapproval in searching for the sheet music to those holly jolly gems in preparation. Right?
As the world’s leading online sheet music provider with over 300,000 professional arrangements, we were curious to find out just how many states share in the joy of the Christmas song search prep.
Still, with 2017’s holiday vibes in full swing, Musicnotes pulled a Ghost of Christmas Past to revisit our 2016 analytics to find the top holiday-inspired songs searched in each state.
On our way down a very musical memory lane, we found that the typical, bouncy Christmas songs weren’t the tunes making the United States merry and bright in 2016. Iowa did channel their inner ’90s diva with Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” while Wisconsin and Mississippi bundled up with “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.”
Ultimately, Christian and faith-based titles were searched for most at Musicnotes during the 2016 Christmas season.
Washington, Idaho, and three more states asked, “Mary, Did You Know?” while New Mexico and Pennsylvania searched Musicnotes for Amy Grant’s “Emmanuel, God With Us.” California visited Whoville with “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and “Carol Of The Bells” made a strong appearance in six states.
Only two states, Nebraska and Maryland, were in the mood for a holiday “Hallelujah,” which is surprising considering “Hallelujah” is a Musicnotes 2017 top leading most popular search term!
So, which song became the top searched holiday-inspired song in 2016?

A total of eleven states searched for “A Cradle Prayer,” making the original piece from Rebecca St. James the top searched holiday-inspired song of 2016.
Rebecca St. James is a Grammy Award winner and multiple Dove Award recipient who wrote “A Cradle Prayer” for her only Christmas album—appropriately titled ‘Christmas‘—released in 1997.
Within her song, Rebecca St. James conjures the magic of Christmas using soft guitar strings and a piano performing a moderato tempo before her crisp vocals sweetly dream of what it would be like kneeling beside baby Jesus nestled in His cradle, singing Him to sleep with a cherished lullaby.
No matter how, or when, you choose to make the holidays musical, you can count on Musicnotes to be your muse for all things merry. What will 2017 search results bring?
