Sunny Day Real Estate release new track

Published: April 20, 2014
It's been just about twenty years since Sunny Day Real Estate released Diary. It's been fourteen years since the band released their final album, The Rising Tide. It's been five
years since they announced their reformation, and one year since bassist Nate Mendel confirmed their third breakup by stating that the recording sessions for their hotly anticipated new album
"just fell apart".

I think, all things considered, it's safe to say that the Seattle emo second-wavers are just about done. Three breakups, a fourteen year gap between now and their last album, and the inability
to finish recording a new album is just about enough. Having said that, I find myself actually wishing that the band would have released that proposed new album because their Record Store Day
split offering 'Lipton Witch'--backed by Circa Survive's 'Bad Heart'--plays as a solid, establishing lead single for an album that will likely never ever come.

It sounds the way it's supposed to; four lauded musicians with a history, playing together again after over a decade apart and sounding quite different as a result. Taking the drifting
alternative rock sound of the band's last album The Rising Tide, melding it with a commanding post-hardcore approach surprisingly akin to Sparta and led by a vigorous vocal performance
from Jeremy Enigk, 'Lipton Witch' has the intent and skilled musicianship of a great band returning and yet heralds no such thing. Whether or not Sunny Day Real Estate is really completely
done, 'Lipton Witch' exists as either a firm, victorious end for the legendary band or the beginning of a new age. The former's admittedly pretty nice, but here's hoping for the latter.
