Linda Clifford – If My Friends Could See Me Now

Brooklyn-born jazz singer turned disco-diva Linda Clifford scored a #1 Billboard Dance smash in 1978 with this week's Top Tune, If My Friends Could See Me Now.

A former Miss New York State, Clifford started working as an actress in major films like The Boston Strangler with Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda, Coogan's Bluff with Clint Eastwood and the film musical Sweet Charity with Shirley MacLaine. The latter earned an Academy Award nomination for the score, it's only fitting that she returned to one if it's classic tunes (penned by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields) for the most successful pop and dance record of her career.

Signed to Curtis Mayfield's Curtom Records in the mid 1970s, Mayfield over saw production of the album of the same name. Curtis brought on jazz trumpeter & composer, Gil Askey to arrange the track. Askey was one of the architects of the legendary Motown sound and served as musical director, producer, and arranger for such artists as Gladys Knight, The Temptations, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder among others. Clifford would go on to record many more albums for the Curtom label including a duet album with Mayfield (The Right Combination) and 1980's I'm Yours produced by Isaac Hayes.
