This Week in Music and More

Published: April 10, 2015

Mornin’ meeps and moops.

Another faaaahbulous Friday is upon us, and here’s what you need to know.

Last weekend was just loaded with NBS coverage. I’m not saying this list of music companies doing awesome stuff with data is listed in order of awesomeness, but also I am saying that. (Billboard)

Our Alex White was prominently featured with what looks like an accidental selfie for this Rolling Stone piece on young innovators. (Rolling Stone)

And the UK’s Telegraph included us in a study on big data firms. (Telegraph)

YouTube finally confirmed the rumblings from last year about a subscription streaming service. SUCH MANY SERVICES. (TechCrunch)

And SoundCloud are making moves toward monetization, partnering with Zefr on copyright management. (The Verge)

A little follow-up on the Tidal launch from Billboard, and what it could mean in terms of chart placements if artists follow Rihanna’s lead and start offering exclusives to the service. My opinion? The rest of us (TRAGICALLY) aren’t Rihanna. Smaller fan base + less users = very probably little play and no chart. (Billboard)

Our friends at Bandsintown put together this quick study on trending artists, based on their tracking data (plz note that my #1 bf made second on the list… aw yiss).(Bandsintown)

Square is leveraging their data to dig into targeted marketing. (Adweek)

And a little microblogging start-up called Twitter is moving toward offering a more curated feed. (FastCo)

As for vids this week, here’s the official video for our man Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen.” I am not ashamed to admit that I spent a significant portion of this week in a Google and Wikipedia rabbit hole researching Trap music. They don’t have it in Norway. (YouTube)
