“Saturday Night Live”’s Pete Davidson: “I Would’ve Killed Myself If I Didn’t Have Kid Cudi”

Earlier today, “Saturday Night Live” cast member Pete Davidson was a guest on “The Breakfast Club” to promote his upcoming Comedy Central special “SMD.” During the interview, he discussed the state of hip-hop, and revealed the importance of Kid Cudi in his life. When asked if he preferred Drake or Kid Cudi, Davidson said, “Oh, Cudi’s the best out of all of them.” He was later asked, “Why do you like Kid Cudi so much?” Davidson answered:

He saved my life. I would’ve killed myself if I didn’t have Kid Cudi. If you’re 25 and under, I truly believe that Kid Cudi saved your life.

He later specified, “I truly believe if Man on the Moon didn’t come out, I wouldn’t be here.” They also discussed Cudi’s recent self-admission into rehab for depression and suicidal urges. Davidson said:

I’ve been in and out of things like that, and I think that’s why a lot of kids my age can relate to Cudi and people love him so much is ’cause he’s a very emotional dude, and he saves all of us.

He added, “It’s comforting to know your hero goes through the same stuff you do.” Davidson also confirmed that he’s been in contact with Cudi while the rapper’s been in rehab. He said Cudi is “in good spirits.”

Davidson also discussed Drake’s recent diss of Kid Cudi on his new track “Two Birds, One Stone.” The feud began when Cudi took shots at Drake and Kanye West on Twitter. Both artists responded at their respective live shows, but West admitted at a later show, “Kid Cudi is my brother.” Davidson applauded West’s move, and did not entirely condemn Drake’s response. “Drake’s just gotta cover his own. That’s all he’s doing. Drake’s just gotta cover his own brand,” he said.

Elsewhere in the interview, Davidson was asked what rappers he’d prefer to see siting on his couch. If faced with the choice between 21 Savage or Lil Yachty, he’d pick Savage; he also said he’d pick Future over Desiigner; Wiz Khalifa over Snoop Dogg; and Drake over Kendrick Lamar. “I respect Kendrick’s craft. I feel like he’s very mad at me when he’s rapping,” he explained. “It’s a different type of music.”

Later, they fixated, once again, on Lil Yachty. “What is this?” Davidson asked. “I feel bad for kids growing up that their favorite rapper is Lil Yachty.” Co-host Charlamagne tha God calls out Davidson for being young himself (22 years old), but Davidson contends, “Yeah, but I was very lucky to grow up when albums were still being made, and, like, you know, an album would come out, you’d go to, like, Best Buy and buy the CD. Everybody else has grown up on streaming and YouTube and Instagram rappers. It’s kinda sad.” Davidson then mocked Yachty’s rapping with a high-pitched imitation.

Watch Pete Davidson’s full interview below. The rap discussion begins at 7:45, they focus on Kid Cudi at 10:42, and Yachty comes up again at 14:05.
