Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood Performs with the London Contemporary Orchestra

Last month, Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood held a concert with the London Contemporary Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall in Manchester, England. In addition to performing selections from his film scores (including, most recently, Inherent Vice), Greenwood performed new music, as well as songs by other musicans selected in tandem with the orchestra.

For the next 72 hours, Boiler Room will be airing the entire concert on a constant loop. Watch below or here.

Greenwood's show with the London Contemporary Orchestra differed from typical classical music performances in several ways. Instead of sitting in assigned seats, the audience was free to move about the space as they wished, and during his composition "Self Portrait with Seven Fingers", attendees could participate in the performance using their mobile phones (that multimedia approach is explained in depth here).

In an interview with journalist Chris Woolfrey for Boiler Room, Greenwood expressed his thoughts on the project:

I felt really high afterwards. Lots of things just seemed to work. Not necessarily the pieces, but the idea of playing them like that. What was good – all these little four or five minutes pieces, and all this faffing around in between, it allowed the audience to talk to each other. There are things that people don’t like, and I find it really interesting that you can have that sort of reaction straight away, with certain things not going down well.

Greenwood's next performance with the London Contemporary Orchestra will take place on February 21 at St John the Evangelist in Oxford, England.
