Michael Stipe Announces New Autobiographical Photo Book

Michael Stipe is working on an autobiographical photo book with his frequent collaborator Jonathan Berger, Stipe says in a new interview with The Creative Independent. The book will be about Stipe’s life and his time with R.E.M. Stipe also reports that the book will come out sometime later this year as the first part in a larger series. He says:

This [book] focuses on my timeline, on the work I’ve done all along, all through the band and back to my early 20s. It’s all photo based, but some of it’s just documentation of things I’m obsessed with and that I focus on to make new pieces from. There are also certain things I’ll take, recontextualize, and present as something completely different.

Stipe also discussed his other projects, including the album he is producing for Fischerspooner. “With Fischerspooner, I’m working as a producer, but also as a co-writer,” Stipe says. “So the lyrics aren’t mine, the arrangements aren’t mine, and the ideas aren’t mine—they’re a combination of several different people. Sometimes it’s my creative voice, but it’s run through someone else.” He and Berger are also working on an audio project for The High Line in New York City, which “will involve composing some pieces of music to be played by this bell tower that will be constructed at the northern end.” Stipe is also debuting a new multimedia installation that‘s soundtracked by a solo score at MoogFest 2017
