Dave Chappelle Almost Did His Rick James Impression on “SNL”

Comedian and writer Neal Brennan, who famously worked with Dave Chappelle for “Chappelle’s Show,” recently sat down with WYNC and shared some details about Chappelle’s post-election episode of “Saturday Night Live.” As Okayplayer points out, during the interview Brennan reveals that Chappelle’s Rick James impersonation was supposed to make an appearance. “It was gonna be a Rick James ‘Weekend Update’ piece about how he was glad that Donald Trump lost,” Brennan told WNYC. The sketch, which was still being written by Brennan and Michael Che on election night, was scrapped when Trump won. Listen to the full interview below.

During the “SNL” episode, Chappelle resurrected several “Chappelle’s Show” characters for a parody of AMC’s “The Walking Dead.” Tyrone Biggums, Clayton Bigsby, Silky, Chuck Taylor, and Chappelle’s Lil Jon all appeared in the sketch. The episode also featured performances from the reunited A Tribe Called Quest.
