Tracks of the Week: A Decade Later

Published: May 17, 2017

May 2007. I was entering my emo phase, I visited my family in Mexico for the first time and they warned me that I’d probably get beat up because I was emo and I was in middle school. (This was actually a phenomenon in Mexico, look it up.)

May 2017. I’m graduating from college in a month, I still have no idea what I’m doing, and I have the pleasure of moving back in with my parents.

To honor the 10 year anniversary of me being in the exact same place as I was, here are some recent releases of artists, including Beach House & Flying Lotus, who’ve been jamming to since 2007 and before.

1) Biao – “PHILOSOPHY”:

“PHILOSOPHY”, the lead single off Biao’s Man of the World, out June 30th, is a fantastic follow up to The Names (2015). Something about the syncopated guitar competing with the horns in opening of this track makes it so blissful. Plus, Vampire Weekend gets full credit for getting me out of my emo phase in 2008 so thank you Biao.

2. Flying Lotus – “Night Grows Pale”:

Flying Lotus’s new track gives me all of the OG Low End Theory era vibes that remind me why he’s been one of my favorite artists growing up. Plus, the Queen sample in this track is just phenomenal.

3. Grizzly Bear – “Mourning Sound”:

Grizzly Bear’s new track “Mourning Sound” is long overdue but worth the wait. If you need a track to blast as you move back into your childhood home, this is your go to.

4. The National – “The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness”:

There are so many different sounds in this track that are perfectly blended. Soulful vibe with a modern twist.

5. Beach House – “Chariot”:

“Chariot” is Beach House’s first single for their upcoming rarities album and I cannot be more excited. Beach House was the first concert I cried too and after listening to this track I’ll probably cry again during their upcoming tour. They’ve been out since 2006 and a decade later, they’re still my go-to whenever I’m in my feels.
