This Week In Music Recap: 8/12-8/17

New album releases, festivals and tours took the music work by storm this past week.

Nashville native, Kesha, released Rainbow on Friday, marking five years since her last album release. While reflecting an emotional personal narrative regarding her previous relationship with her former music producer, the pop singer still manages to create upbeat, dance-worthy singles featuring big name artists like Dolly Parton and Eagles of Death Metal. Kesha reveals her inspiration for the title of her album with Refinery29, stating that her life struggles led her to believe that “… after the storm, there’s a rainbow.” Uplifting hits “Woman” and “Learn to Let Go” have already reached Billboard Top 100 for the month of August just days after release. The Los Angeles based singer felt determined to make her fans feel confident and proud of themselves, even so with powerful singles like “Bastard”, which was dedicated to victims of bullying.

Golden Gate Park witnessed an all-star artist packed weekend at Outside Lands with sets performed by Gorillaz, Metallica, The Who, Lorde and more. On Friday, Gorillaz kicked off their 2017 tour with hits like “Feel Good Inc” and “Clint Eastwood” and brought countless artists on stage, including Pusha T, Little Dragon, Bootie Brown and many, many more.

On Saturday, Metallica’s two-hour set, combined with performances by Cage the Elephant and A Tribe Called Conquest earlier that day, gave fans a summer night to remember. Rocking out to songs like “Enter Sandman” and “Nothing Else Matters”, the legacy metal band was certainly the highlight of the day.

The final day started off on an emotional yet beautifully sensational note with Solange’s reference to the recent Charleston shooting mid-set as she paused, “Before we do this next song, I want to say stay up. I know it’s been a rough few days. … You matter, you belong.” Nonetheless, the weekend did end on a high one with The Who playing some of their timeless hits like “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” as they mic-dropped and exited the stage to the Batman Theme Song.

Alice Cooper kicked off his North American Tour in Las Vegas on Saturday to promote his newest studio album Paranormal. Although the rock singer has a, what seems to be, countless album catalog, he managed to play hits from various ones, such as the ever so young hit “I’m Eighteen” from Love it to Death (1972) and “Paranoiac Personality” from Paranormal (2017). Mid-set, Alice brought Los Angeles born guitarist Nita Strauss on stage for an electrifying guitar solo, quickly followed by Billboard song “Poison”. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer ended his unforgettable set with one of our all time favorite summer jams, “School’s Out”.
