Coachella Weekend 1 – 2017 Highlights

Coachella has steadily become the largest, most influential music festival in the U.S., paving the way for West Coast culture one performance at a time. With over 100 artists performing in the span of 3 days, there is never a shortage of history-making moments on those desert stages.

This year, main stage headliners Radiohead, Lady Gaga and Kendrick Lamar each had their shining moments:

Radiohead have been coursing through the states for their ‘A Moon Shaped Pool’ tour over the last few weeks. Not that they needed the practice to deliver a jaw-dropping show, but it definitely helped when they ran into some rare technical difficulties from the usually flawless production team.

Ironically, they first started having audio issues during “Ful Stop” and had to take an intermission when the audio cut out halfway into “15 Step.” After the second time the band had to leave the premises and return back on stage, Yorke asks the crowd, “Can you actually hear me now?”

“I’d like to tell a joke and lighten the mood, but we’re Radiohead so f— it.”

See how their setlist this year changed since they graced the ‘Chella stages back in 2004 and both weekends of 2012.

Though Lady Gaga had some large shoes to fill, she did just that and more. It’s no surprise Mother Monster drew in the largest crowd of the weekend with her electrifying performance on Saturday night.

From her high-energy hits like “Love Game” and “Just Dance” to a live debut of “The Cure,” she brought her A-Game to the 100,000 fans in the audience. You can see the full setlist here.

Kendrick Lamar’s fourth full-length album ‘DAMN.’ dropped through Top Dawg Entertainment on Friday as the anticipation for the weekend was at its peak. Already, the work has credited the talented MC with applause “the most important MC in America” (TIME) and “master storyteller” (Pitchfork).

Kendrick stormed through multiple live debuts with his closing performance, throwing in some of his biggest tracks like “Backseat Freestyle,” “m.A.A.d city” and “Money Trees.” You can see the full setlist here.

This year’s rendition featured a 20-acre expansion, increasing the capacity from 99,000 to 125,000 people. With this growth came an even wider array of musical selection. The options were endless with Father John Misty and The xx on the main stage, to left field rockers Jagwar Ma and DREAMCAR in the Gobi, to Moderat and Richie Hawtin in the Mojave, and all the way to Four Tet and Dixon in the Yuma.

Though the headliners are an obvious crowd-drawer, we recommend taking some time to look at the other artists on the bill for Weekend 2 — you never know when you might stumble across your new favorite band in the middle of those dusty sunsets.
