Third Ion

By now, you should know the drill. Weve been having musicians from across metals grand spectrum pen brief guest columns for us on a number of engaging topics: must-read books, must-see films, and bands you may not know but absolutely should.

Todays column comes from Third Ion member Justin Bender; check the band out here.

Saga
I know these guys had a hit or two in the late ’70s and early ’80s but I didn’t catch wind of them until recent years. Their 2009 album Human Condition is a prog masterpiece, with really really great vocals and musical perfection. I’m telling you to listen to these guys, but also reminding myself to check out more from the their extensive catalogue. I’ve got some proggin’ to do!!

Temple of Thieves
I have a feeling these guys won’t be very underground for very long. My Digital Doomzday bandmate Flo played drums on this record, and introduced it to me last year. I can’t wait to see what they do in the future!

Anciients
Absolutely the coolest new band to come out of my part of the world in a long time. Sorta bridges the gap between stoner metal and Blackwater Park-era Opeth. Heart of Oak is one of my favorite albums in the past year; check them out for SURE!!
