Guest Column: Three Bands You May Not Know But Should By Caveat’s Brandon O’Connell

Caveat

By now, you should know the drill.

We’ve been having musicians from across metal’s grand spectrum pen brief guest columns for us on a number of engaging topics: must-read books, must-see films, and bands you may not know but absolutely should.

Today’s column was written by Caveat‘s own Brandon O’Connell.

Wolf Blood from Duluth, Minnesota. Their pummeling sound is reminiscent of Black Sabbath, Saviours and Kylesa. Heavy on rhythms, big on riffs, Wolf Blood just re-released their debut self-titled album (originally released on cassette) on vinyl. This album does not disappoint.

Look for these guys to be making huge waves in the near future.

Next up is Staves, hailing from Appleton, Wisconsin.

This post-black metal/sludge trio is hard to define and pin down into just one genre. At times their sound is atmospheric and menacing and at other times it is absolutely crushing.

Some could compare them to Deafheaven but with more depth to their sound, like Isis or even Neurosis at times. Either way, this band has a bright future.

Finally, Bereft, from Madison, Wisconsin, is one of my favorite bands to appear, especially locally, in quite some time.

Their sound gravitates from crushing sludge to chaotic but well-refined black metal. Lost Ages, Bereft’s debut full length made my top 20 albums of 2014 list and upon listening, you will understand why. It is mature and perfect in all the right ways. Keep an eye out for these guys. You’ll be glad you did.

Bonus pick: My good friends in Good Guys Wear Wolf from Chetek, Wisconsin. These riff-rockers deserve some recognition. Their debut album Dances With Snakes just dropped. Check it out. It rules.
