Birmingham misery merchants Opium Lord have made a new video for their song ‘Pink Mass’, comprised of tour footage from their recent American tour with the mighty Primitive Man. We caught up with vocalist Nathan Coyle to find out about the differences between touring the UK and the US, and what happens when your hotel room is full of hypodermic needles, satanic paraphernalia and the “reek of stale sex”…
So you’ve just finished your first American tour – how did it go? What were your highlights?
“Yeah it was amazing, we went through Canada and popped over to Europe when we got back too. I think we went through 13 US States in all, it’s an amazing place and everybody was friendly. I really enjoyed it all but Philadelphia and New Hampshire stood out for me.”
You toured with Primitive Man in the UK recently too so you must know those guys pretty well by now. Any tall tales from the road?
“Haha yeah they are good mates and they made it possible to go over there, it mostly just involves ripping the piss out of each other, I’ve given them all special nicknames. We love them all to death.”
Was it all pretty much clean-sailing, or did you have any mishaps along the way?
“No it was all pretty easy going, the only downside is promoters don’t really put you up over there so we stopped in hotels 90% of the time. When we stopped in Toronto we stayed in the Waverly Hotel which I can only describe as a cesspit, the widow to our room was smashed and fixed with cardboard, there was a centipede stuck to the wall with gum in the toilet, blood spots from hypodermic needles everywhere, loads of racist and satanic writing on the walls and the sheets reeked of stale sex. I think we stayed in a brothel in Long Island too. Looked like people had a great time in that hotel.”
What would you say are the main differences between touring the UK and the US?
“Well, bar the hotels not much really, the food is just better. It’s a lot different in Europe I think.”
Have you got any more other touring activity coming up soon?
“Yeah we are heading out on a big European tour in March but until then we’ll just be playing one off shows in the UK as we are neck deep in writing our second album, we will have details on another Opium Lord release this year too.”
