Death metal fans, rejoice! The fine folk behind Chimpyfest are bringing Danish filth kings Undergang over to play a free show in London this Halloween, alongside British black/death metallers Burial and the thoroughly evil Qrixkuor.
Ever since they belched forth from the Danish underground with debut album ‘Indhentet af Dden’ back in 2009, Undergang have quickly become one of those bands that are spoken about in hushed tones within death metal circles – and with good reason too, as the band’s resolutely disgusting mixture of early Autopsy churn, Demilich style dementia and suffocating, Rippikoulu-esque doom passages is about as invigorating as the genre gets.
Don’t tag these guys as one of those retrogressive “new wave of old school death” bands or whatever either, as even though they might take a hefty dose of inspiration from the classics, the band’s unhinged sound and the murky, morbid atmosphere they create is entirely their own. This particular scribe caught them live a few years back (shortly after the release of their crushing second LP ‘Til Dden Os Skiller’) with the mighty Funebrarum, and it’s no exaggeration to say they completely blew them off stage. Now, if that’s not a glowing recommendation, we don’t know what is!
