Prepare yourselves; Torpor and Sonance, two of Britain’s heaviest sludge/post-metal bands, have joined forces for a humongous split LP, and you can stream the whole thing right here with Terrorizer…
After delivering one of last year’s heftiest and most cathartic albums in ‘From Nothing Comes Everything’, Torpor’s future briefly seemed uncertain as Nats Spada departed the band several months afterwards. Thankfully, they’ve decided to continue as a three piece, and if you care to hit play below it’ll become instantly clear that they haven’t sacrificed any of that dense, bludgeoning power that makes them so special. The three tracks that comprise their side of this split see all three members (Jon Taylor on guitar, Lauren Mason on bass and Simon Mason on drums) chipping in with vocals, and from the oppressive weight of ‘Jasager’ and ‘Agalma’ to the eerie, unnerving ‘Environs’, it works perfectly.
Meanwhile, Sonance offer up three bleak, atmospheric songs of their own on side B, proving themselves to be a perfect match for Torpor’s crushing emanations. The Bristol based quartet have been very prolific over the past few years, with their two full-lengths (2012’s ‘Like Ghosts’ and 2014’s ‘Blackflower’) finding a perfect balance between sombre, mournful post-rock and skull pulping heaviness, and as anyone who caught either of their performances at the last two editions of Temples Festival will attest, their live show rivals the likes of Neurosis and Amenra in terms of intensity. These tracks could well be the most sonically punishing they’ve caught on tape so far, but we’ll let you be the judge of that…
