Leicestershire stoner metal quintet Mage will be releasing their riff laden new album ‘Last Orders’ next week, but you can stream the whole thing in full, right here, right now…

‘Last Orders’ is Mage’s second album, the follow-up to 2012’s crushing ‘Black Sands’. Recorded in August 2014 at Skyhammer Studio in the UK, and engineered and produced by Chris Fielding (Conan, Electric Wizard, Napalm Death, Wynterfylleth), ‘Last Orders’ is a big step up from its predecessor, marrying hazy Kyuss-esque grooves to more upbeat sections reminiscent of Clutch, and even the odd thrashy outburst too.

The band themselves had this to say about the album…

“‘Last Orders’ feels like a distillation of what’s come before. What we do is heavily based in the Doom and Stoner end of things, but we have such diverse influences and inspirations that throwing in a buzzsaw Thrash section, or a trad Heavy Metal gallop just feels natural. We try not to get tied up in genre restrictions, there’s never any talk of “Is that too fast? Is that too Metal? Is that Stoner/Doom enough?”, we write primarily for ourselves, the love of the riff and the big stupid grin you get in the practice room when a new song comes together and everyone locks into the groove.

“Our main aim this time was a little more songcraft I guess, taking those riffs and those diverse elements and really working them into shape, writing, rewriting, rearranging all the time. We had around eight or nine songs and another four or five main riffs at the start of this year and we just worked and worked on them until we pared it down to the seven tracks that feature on the album. The old cliche, all killer, no filler, I guess.

“Working with Chris Fielding at Skyhammer was absolutely phenomenal, he pushed us further than anyone has before, we had three days to nail the recording and mixing and it was a tough task, very long days. Chris worked above and beyond the call of duty, always pushing, throwing out suggestions and helping each of us give the best performance we could.

We’re so proud of the end result, it feels like a “complete” piece of work, it has a very distinct beginning, middle and end, the flow is there and it’s heavy as hell. Feedback so far from the new tracks when we’ve played them live has been incredibly positive and I can’t wait for everyone to hear the studio versions of the songs, I think people who enjoyed our previous releases, and first time listeners, will be blown away.”

‘Last Orders’ is due to be released as a digipak CD with a series of nifty looking art cards and stickers, courtesy of the ever reliable Witch Hunter Records. Check out this rather tasty looking package below, and then stream the album in full…
