Blues Pills

Swedish hard rock quartet Blues Pills‘ incredible debut album is finally due to be released on Monday via Nuclear Blast, but if you just want to jam it right this very second, you’re in luck, as Terrorizer is proud to present a stream of the entire thing…

Out of all of the many splendored eras of rock, that soulful late 60s/early 70s sound is arguably the most fetishised. It seems like yet another overly earnest troupe of paisley clad Zeppelin fanatics appears every week, desperately trying to recapture the sound of those glory days but, more often than not, resulting in nothing more than bland, pub rock drudgery. At first glance, you may well be mistaken in lumping Swedish quartet Blues Pills in with this unashamedly retro crowd, but to do so would be a grievous error indeed. Whilst the band certainly take their cues from the usual suspects (Led Zep, Sabbath, Cream, Hendrix, early Fleetwood Mac etc), they do so with such a fervent, youthful passion that its impossible to remain unmoved by it and thats before weve mentioned the groups secret weapon, frontwoman Elin Larrson, who is blessed with an astonishingly powerful voice that recalls Janis Joplin in her prime and will make your neck hair stand on end at twenty paces.

We never sat down and planned to try to and be as vintage as possible, and we dont wish we were living in the 60s. Were happy to be living in 2014, but it just happens we like a lot of records from back then so it comes out in the music, Elin explains. When I listen to a band I dont think to myself, does this sound like its from the 60s/70s? I just think about, does it have emotion, feeling, does it feel true, are the lyrics good, [are there] quality musicians? Thats the same when we write music, we never say, this melody doesnt sound 60s enough! Throw it in the garbage! We are just trying to write a good song.Thats the only goal in mind.

Still, if wed been told that the bands debut album was in fact a long lost relic from 1967, its only the crisp production that would give the game away. The bands performances, from Zack Andersons earthy bass and Dorian Sorriauxs deliciously Iommiian licks all the way through to Elins impassioned howl, all hark back to a time when bands couldnt just rely on studio trickery they had to really mean it. Considering the band are all in their early 20s, its remarkable not only that theyve been able to tap into the spirit of a bygone era so easily, but that theyve managed to make such a familiar sound seem so fresh and electrifying again. I think maybe the reason the younger bands sound more fresh is because, people in my generation who discover older music, its like discovering something completely new, since you didnt live through it, Elin muses. I know thats how I felt when I started getting into older music, so it was something exciting and new, although the music was from the past.

After releasing the Bliss EP in 2012, the band were picked up by Nuclear Blast last year for the barnstorming Devil Man EP, (the title track of which is a sure fire crowd pleaser if ever weve heard one), and show no signs of slowing, as Elin already has her eyes trained on the future. We are really looking forward to recording our second album, she beams. The first album was our first recording in a real studio, which was so much fun, and we cant wait to go in and do that again. Our ambitions at the moment are to just continue writing music and recording, and playing live gigs. Right now, the band is pretty much our whole life, so theres not much time left for anything else.
