Psychedelic Witchcraft: Band of the Day

Published: April 29, 2016

Florence’s ’70s-influenced occult rockers Psychedelic Witchcraft release their new album ‘The Vision’ via Soulseller Records today. We spoke with Virginia Monti to find out more about the band and her own vision…

How did you get started?

Psychedelic Witchcraft started in the early 2015 with myself Virginia Monti (Vocalist) making the first EP “Black Magic Man” as a solo artist. After several months Jacopo, Riccardo and Daniele (ex-drummer) took intense part in the project. Daniele left because of personal problems (Nothing to do with the band), Mirko lately joined at the drums.

Did you have a specific sound in mind when you formed the band, or did that grow and evolve as you played together?

I’ve been inspired by the sounds and the colors of an almost lost era, the ’70s. Biggest inspirations for what concern the imaginary are the Hammer Horror Movies from the ’70s and Italian directors like Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, Dario Argento.

‘Angela’ is inspired by ‘Blood on Satan’s Claw’… the music (is) highly inspired by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, The Faces, Free, but also inspired by great singers like Howlin’ Wolf, Donny Hathaway, Dina Washington, Big Mama Thornton, Muddy Waters.

What kind of stuff are you and the rest of the band into? Who would you cite as influences?

My influences are basically the one written above! Jacopo and Mirko are a lot into Progressive Rock while Riccardo is more into Stoner Rock and Blues. We would cite Black Sabbath as a common influence for sure!

How does your writing process normally work out? Will you meet up with song ideas pretty much fully formed beforehand, or do you tend to jam stuff out a bit more?

I use to write the songs and lyrics with the acoustic guitar : the songs then take a precise shape working all together with the members of the band. Up to now we didn’t use to jam that much but lately we’re going into that direction, taking ways more attributable to Blues Rock and more kind of Jam things.

What’s been your best moment as a band? And on the flipside, what’s been the worst thing to happen to you in music?

The best moment for us has been the pre-order CD sold out of the album! We’re very happy about this.
Though we don’t feel that much of a bad flipside overall, I could just tell you about bad sounds on the stage during some gigs haha, but out of that I wouldn’t know what to say!

What’s next for you?

We just want to play and share our latest work ‘The Vision’, coming out with Soulseller Records in the end of April.
We’re working on a second album already, at the moment though we’re focusing on playing ‘The Vision’ as much as we can!

Psychedelic Witchcraft are:
Virginia Monti – Vocals
Jacopo Fallai – Guitars
Riccardo Giuffrè – Bass Guitar
Mirko Buia – Drums
