Despite being active for less than a year, Mancunian newcomers Pist have built up quite a name for themselves over the past twelve months with some fairly relentless gigging. The band have recently released their debut EP ‘Riffology’ via When Planets Collide (recorded in one weekend at Skyhammer Studios with producer Chris Fielding at the helm), which, as the name implies, certainly doesn’t skimp on the riff front. Stoner rock fans will find much to enjoy within the quartet’s big, greasy Orange Goblin-esque grooves, so we got in touch with guitarist John Nicholson to find out more…

Could you tell us briefly how you all met and formed Pist?
John (Nicholson, guitar): “We all met through mutual friends and going to gigs in Manchester. Dave and Andy have known each other since they were kids.”
Did you have a specific sound in mind when you formed the band, or did that grow and evolve as you played together?
John: “It all came naturally just by jamming and playing what we thought sounded good. You can hear our main influences pretty clearly but we all listen to a wide variety of music which will eventually make it’s way into our music as we write new tunes.”
What kind of stuff are you and the rest of the band into? Who would you cite as influences?
John: “Between us we’re into all sorts, classic rock, doom, stoner rock, sludge, thrash, black metal, grind and even some gangsta rap haha.”
Your new EP ’Riffology’ sounds cool, could you tell us a little bit about it?
John: “Most of it was written between myself and Dave before the band was formed. When we got the right line up we went straight into Skyhammer Studio to record it with Chris Fielding which was a great experience, we can’t recommend that place enough and Chris was perfect. Gareth Kelly from Gurt and When Planets Collide was nice enough to release it for us and promote it. We’re really happy with it and the response has been amazing!”
How does your writing process normally work out? Will you meet up with song ideas pretty much fully formed beforehand, or do you tend to jam stuff out a bit more?
John: “For ‘Riffology’ the songs were all written before hand, but the new ones were all ideas brought into the practice room and eventually pieced into a finished song.”
You’ve got a split with Bong Cauldron looming on the horizon too – what can you tell us about that?
John: “There will be 3 tracks from us and 2 from BongCauldron as their songs are longer. We’re both recording at Skyhammer Studio and it will be out by the end of the year, were currently searching for the right label to release it.”
What are your ambitions for Pist?
John: “I would love us to become a full time band, record and tour the world and play with some of our favourite bands. It’s all we want to do.”
What’s been your best moment as a band? And on the flipside, what’s been the worst thing to happen to you in music?
John: “I think the best moment so far was hearing the finished EP, we were blown away by how it sounded and how well Chris Fielding worked on it. One of the worst things to happen to me in music is the deaths of some great musicians like Dimebag, Ronnie James Dio, Jeff Hanneman etc”
What’s next for you guys?
John: “We’re going to keep on gigging and writing new tunes for the album around the recording of our split with BongCauldron.”
