Stephen Tanner, bassist for sludge titans Harvey Milk, is due to release his first solo album under the name Music Blues this August. He’s also just released a video for the aptly titled song ‘The Great Depression’, which you can see right here, exclusively with Terrorizer…

Harvey Milk should need no introduction; alongside bands like The Melvins and Earth, the band were responsible for sewing the seeds of what we know refer to as “sludge” in the early ’90s, and have produced a string of crippling heavy albums since their humble beginnings in 1992. Stephen Tanner has been with the band since the very beginning, but this is the first time he’s ventured out in the musical wilderness on his own.

Stephen wrote the majority of his debut solo album ‘Things Haven’t Gone Well’ while he crashed at Harvey Milk vocalist and guitarist Creston Spiers house in 2010 in Georgia, following the death of longtime friend drummer Jerry Fuchs (LCD Soundsystem, Turing Machine, !!!).

Tanner had this to say about his creative muse for the record:

Depression has always been the main theme in Harvey Milk and all that started when Jerry passed away. I didnt have a job, I didnt have anywhere to live, my girlfriend and I broke up. I stayed at Crestons house which was more depressing than anything, for 3 months.

Completely written and recorded by Tanner, in Georgia at Crestons and in his Brooklyn apartment,’Things Have Not Gone Well’ feels like a continuation of his work with Harvey Milk whilst simultaneously pushing his distinctive style into much darker and weirder pastures. Just check out the ominous ‘The Great Depression’ below if you need proof…
