Listen To Slabdragger & Wren Covering Frank Zappa & Captain Beefheart

Published: October 23, 2017

UK sludge acts Slabdragger and Wren have teamed up for a new split release, transforming Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart classics into towering doom monoliths. It’s out this Friday, but you can hear the whole thing right here, right now…

The split goes by the rather fantastic name ‘Mothers Of Beef And The Magic Of Invention’, and will be released on 12″ vinyl, CD and digital download, complete with some snazzy artwork courtesy of Terra drummer Luke Braddick.

If you’ve had the pleasure of catching Slabdragger live recently, you’ll have probably heard their crushing rendition of Zappa’s ‘Muffin Man’ already, but this studio version is an absolute monster, amping up the original’s riffs to ludicrous levels and morphing the song’s hilarious intro monologue into a sickly, nightmarish soundscape.

On the other side, Wren slow Beefheart’s spritely ‘Electricity’ down to an almost unrecognisable crawl, revelling in the original’s implied heaviness and finding previously unexplored nuances within it at the same time.

It’s a wild ride indeed, but don’t just take our word for it – check it out in full below…

‘Mothers Of Beef And The Magic Of Invention’ is out this Friday via Holy Roar, and is available to purchase here
