Nottingham has quite a reputation for churning out great bands, and new grindcore act Carcosa are no exception. Formed out of the ashes of bands like Huffin’ Paint, Drag The Lake and Opposition, the quartet have just released their first demo, a short, sharp shock to the system that recalls that same fervent, chaotic intensity that made bands like Narcosis so thrilling. They also find room to throw in a couple of big, fat circle-pit inducing riffs amongst all the caustic, discordant fury, so if you’re partial to a bit of grind, this is going to tick all the right boxes.
Carcosa have wasted no time bringing their audio carnage to the stage either and have a bunch of great looking home town shows in the pipeline for the next few months (hit ‘em at carcosagrind@gmail.com if you’d like to book them further afield!), so we caught up with guitarist Ian Boult to find out more…

Could you tell us briefly how you all met and formed Carcosa?
Ian (Boult, guitar): “I have known all the guys for a while, I’ve been mates with Eddie (vocals) for a long time and we were in the band Huffin’ Paint together before this but we wanted to play something a bit more serious and angrier. One advantage of running a studio I get to meet lots of musicians so got talking with Jay who used to be in Drag The Lake and Dave who was in Opposition and both wanted to do something fast and grindy.”
Did you have a specific sound in mind when you formed the band, or did that grow and evolve as you played together?
Ian: “Well we just knew we wanted to do something fast, heavy and angry sounding. I had a few song ideas already and went from there.”
What kind of stuff are you and the rest of the band into? Who would you cite as influences?
Ian: “I listen to a lot of different things from hardcore punk, grindcore, grime, noise, doom and more but wanting to keep the music influences simple, bands like Insect Warfare, Deathtoll 80k, Punch, Wormrot, Nails. Fast, heavy and aggressive.”
How does your writing process normally work out? Will you meet up with song ideas pretty much fully formed beforehand, or do you tend to jam stuff out a bit more?
Ian: “So far it’s been mostly written in full beforehand and then amended in the practice room with Eddie adding lyrics after the music has been fully written. I think as we learn more on how each other play and work we’ll write more when we jam.”
How would you describe the Carcosa live show for those unlucky punters who have yet to see you guys?
Ian: “Sweaty, awkward and over very quickly, much like my sex life.”
That logo looks gnarly as fuck who designed it?
Ian: “A mate of ours Daniel Knox-Hewson did it, he’s mint, he did some great stuff for Megalodoom too.”
There are a ridiculous amount of great grind bands in the UK right now are there any you want to give a shout-out to that we may have missed?
Ian: “There are some great UK bands around at the moment. Evisorax, Famine, The Afternoon Gents, The Day Man Lost, Oblivionized and Human Cull are sick and a new grind band from Nottingham called Anti-Social Behaviour Order are great too.”
Whats been your best moment as a band? And on the flipside, whats been the worst thing to happen to you in music?
Ian: “We are a relatively new band so it’s just been great getting positive reactions from the music. I don’t think there has been anything particularly bad happen to me in any of the bands I’ve been in, I think the worst thing to happen to me in music is hearing Avenged Sevenfold.”
What does the future have in store for Carcosa?
Ian: “Drink more Buckfast, release some vinyl, play more gigs and go on tour.”
