White Men Can’t Jump remake in the works from Black-ish creator Kenya Barris

Published: January 17, 2017

’90s box office hit White Men Can’t Jump is going to see some playing time again soon — that is, as a remake.

Kenya Barris, creator of the Golden Globe-winning ABC sitcom Black-ish, is leading the new project for Twentieth Century Fox, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He’s expected to provide the script and serve as co-producer alongside pro-athletes-turned-producers in Los Angeles Clippers power forward Blake Griffin and Ryan Kalil, center for the Carolina Panthers.

Originally released in 1992, White Men Can’t Jump starred Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes as an unlikely duo of basketball hustlers who team up to take over the street ball courts of Los Angeles. Its title comes from a joke that guys like Harrelson’s character are unable to get airborne on the court (this is, of course, untrue). The comedy, which was directed and written by Ron Shelton (Tin Cup, Bull Durham), went on to become one of the top grossing movies that year.

No word on who’s being eyed to star in the new remake. In addition to Black-ish, Barris is working on a Shaft reboot.

Below, revisit a trailer for the original version of the film.
