Don’t let the name fool you: Netherlands are not from the Netherlands. They are, however, one of Brooklyn’s favorite local bands whose only mission is to melt some goddamn face — a craft they’ve been honing since 2010.
Their brand new single “Army!” is a crusty-yet-refined eneavor that checks off every box. It lurches and stumbles throughout, its only grounding force the warped synth-bass that gives Netherlands their bizzare allure. Tones from the synths, guitars, and vocals mingle in such a way that’s almost trance-inducing, leaving your mind in a perpetual state of wubwubwubwaaaaahhhhh long after the song’s ended.
The band’s innovative sound is largely influenced by frontman Timo Ellis’ smorgasbord of collaborations with the likes of Yoko Ono, Melvins, John Zorn, Cibo Matto, Gibby Haynes, Ween, and more. With a resume like that, it’s no surprise that Netherlands have been able to craft an aesthetic that draws from genres all over the board: psych rock, punk, sludge, doom, and even hints of pop. Listen to “Army!” from Netherlands’ upcoming record Black Gaia down below. AND make sure to catch Netherlands in the wackiest tour of the year with mothafuckin’ Mastodon and Dinosaur Jr this fall!
