Justin Bieber has been banned from China

Published: July 21, 2017

Justin Bieber’s managed to keep his headlines scandal-free the last little while (well, mostly)… but his recent stint of lying low and behaving hasn’t convinced one of his biggest detractors: The People’s Republic of China.

“Justin Bieber is a gifted singer, but he is also a controversial young foreign singer,” said an official at the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture, when asked by a Chinese Bieber fan why JB hadn’t made a tour stop in the country in many years, despite playing dates in nearby regions like Japan, Singapore, the Philippines, and Japan on his latest tour. “In order to maintain order in the Chinese market and purify the Chinese performance environment, it is not suitable to bring in badly behaved entertainers. We hope that as Justin Bieber matures, he can continue to improve his own words and actions, and truly become a singer beloved by the public.”

In case you need a refresher, Bieb’s bad boy behaviour over the past few years has included a drunk driving arrest, allegedly head-butting an onlooker at a pre-Grammy party, and publicly pissing in a mop bucket while yelling “fuck Bill Clinton!”.  That’s quite the rap sheet, but there have also been two China-specific incidents, though that probably are responsible for raising the ire of the Chinese government: getting carried up the Great Wall by his bodyguards, for which he was widely mocked, and some impromptu mall skateboarding in Beijing, both back in 2013.

At least Bieber’s in good company: Lady Gaga, Oasis, and Bjork are just a few of the acts denied from performing in the country by the Chinese government, with the Ministry of Culture announcing that artistic groups who “threaten national unity” or “whip up ethnic hatred”  during live events would be banned from performing after Bjork controversially cried “Tibet, Tibet!” during a performance of Volta‘s “Declare Independence” in 2008. Well…that’s a much cooler reason for getting banned than being carried up the Great Wall cause you’re tired.
