Well boys and girls, I’m going to tell you all of the new birdshit coming out. There’s a lot of it, but hey, according to my tagline I’m a cranky parrot, which I am. I’ve also been obsessed with this new “crunk core” band Unicorns Killed My Girlfriend, and although I’m not religious, this really is the end of times.
WRONG is releasing WRONG on Relapse, and I’m pecking digging this one. Noise rock in the vein of Unsane and Cutthroats 9. This is heavy, and has that kind of New York industrial noise type vibe (even though I think they’re from Florida). This is ripping and I’d be willing to bet that this band SLAYS live. The production here is nice and crisp, and I kinda wish that it was a little dirtier. This is killer, look out for this band. 7 Fucking Pecks.
FALLUJAH, self-proclaimed “Atmospheric Death Metal”, whatever that is… is releasing Dreamless, and I gotta say, it’s not my pecking thing at all. Dreamless is proggy, atmospheric, death metal and well… I guess it really IS “atmospheric death metal”. These guys can play no doubt and although there are a lot of instrumental interludes, they don’t feel pointless or tacked on. Most progressive metal records come can come across scattered at times, you know, where the band wants to prove they can play and will wedge whatever 19/7 time signature in? Well this doesn’t do that, there is a distinct emphasis on songwriting and instead of sounding schizophrenic, it comes across more cohesive. That being said, it’s just another Fallujah record and isn’t super distinct compared to their other releases. Also, isn’t the genre called “heavy metal”? Shouldn’t it be heavy? The teaser track/first single has some female Evanescence style vocals too… OOF! Not my thing at all. 3 Fucking Pecks.
Now, I get to get into some good death metal. GRAVE MIASMA are releasing the Endless Pilgramage EP on Sepulchural Voice and my very first problem is… Why just an EP? Aren’t they due for a full length? This is old school death metal, to a tee, AND it’s good. There really isn’t like anything new here, but you know, some brutality, a little attention to songwriting and an overall vibe can go a long way. I’ve been aware of these guys for a while now and am a fan of the way they mix a little (and I mean just a tinge) of black metal in their death metal. This is ripping, get this and go and bang your beaking beak!
Here’s some other things that are coming out that are pretty ripping. COFFIN DUST have a new one and it’s awesome, and MUSKET HAWK are coming out of the gate with an awesome release, both on Unholy Anarchy. NOTHING from Philly have released a dream pop, and heavy (and pretty) masterpiece. Can you tell I’m not that cranky?
