Video | Bayonne: “Appeals”

Bayonne

One of my biggest possible gripes with most electronic music is simply that it often doesn’t translate very well into a live setting. Some bands do their best to combat that, adding in auxiliary elements like light shows and the like but most times, despite the absolute technical precision necessary in sound quality, the actual music making portion, for all its hard-won effort and complexity tends to not be very interesting. Enter Bayonne. Roger Sellers, the man behind the slick one-man machine, manages to put on an absolutely captivating show with more energy than some rock bands.

Sellers’ new video for “Appeals”, the second single off his upcoming album Primitives (his first under the Bayonne moniker) , provides an adequate look into what makes Sellers such a thrilling performer. Sellers’ loops pulse with life and the man takes an incredibly active approach in his music’s presentation that makes it swiftly and abundantly clear the man is no DJ. And it’s not really even about the spectacle – sure Sellers opting for live drums add a nice organic touch but musically speaking, the man’s crafts incredibly lush musical words. It’s compositional minimalism where each layer is equally engaging even before the song is in full bloom. Sellers’ touch is surprisingly light but unafraid to push a song to extremes. If you were unfamiliar with Bayonne before, the “Appeals” video directed by Zach Stone is a brilliant crash course and is guaranteed to send you off fiending for more.

Bayonne’s debut album Primitives is out 3/25 on Mom + Pop.
