Musicians that passed away in 2016 Part 1.

In chronological order of death.

RED080619AMERICANBR02_001Every year many people die. It hits hard when you have met the deceased. It hits harder when it’s somebody close to you. Many people feel saddened when a celebrity dies because they feel they know them. They were used to seeing their famous face on TV or listening to their voice on the radio; they followed their lives, their relationships, the houses they lived in, the clothes they wore. Sometimes they become accustomed to celebrities, fantazising to become like them: famous, talented and attractive. We generally see celebrities as winners, successful and glamorous. Some of them live sad, depressive lives while others live long prosperous lives. Here we will read and see about the lives of some of the musicians that died in 2016. Whatever the case and whatever the cause, here at VanMusic we want to pay homage to some of the musicians bowiethat left us in 2016, a year many people called a killer.

David Bowie (born David Robert Jones 8 January 1947 South London – 10 January 2016 New York)

Cause of death: Liver cancer.

To talk about David Bowie is to talk about one of the icons of the pop culture. Singer, songwriter, actor and chameleon. The Starman made like 25 albums and 25 films and many TV shows, cameos and special presentations. A true XX century genius.

Terence Dale “Buffin” Griffin (24 October 1948 Ross-on-Wye UK – 17 January 2016 )

Cause of death: Alzheimer

Buffin was an English drummer and founding member of 1970s rock band Mott the Hoople. Check out this version of David Bowie’s song All the young dudes. You can see Buffin give in it on the drums.

Glenn Lewis Frey (November 6, 1948 Detroit Michigan– January 18, 2016 New York)

Cause of death: Complications of rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis, and pneumonia, while recovering from gastrointestinal tract surgery.

Glen Frey is better knows as one of the founders of the Eagles. He was a singer songwriter and guitar player and also an actor appearing in TV series like Miami Vice.

Paul Lorin Katner (March 17, 1941 San Francisco, CA – January 28, 2016 San Francisco, CA)

Cause of death: multiple organ failure and septic shock after he suffered a heart attack days earlier

Katner was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter, known for co-founding Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship. A political anarchist, Kantner once advocated the use of psychedelic drugs such as LSD for mind expansion and spiritual growth, and was a prominent advocate of the legalization of marijuana.

Signe Toly Anderson (September 15, 1941 Seattle– January 28, 2016 Beaverton Oregon)

Cause of Death: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Signe Toly was an American singer who was one of the founding members of the American rock band Jefferson Airplane. She died the same day as Katner his bandmate.

Vanity aka Denise Katrina Matthews (January 4, 1959 Niagara Falls– February 15, 2016),

Cause of Death: Renal failure.

Canadian singer, songwriter, dancer, actress and model, She was the lead singer of the female trio Vanity 6 produced by Prince. This song Nasty Girl was written by the also departed Prince.

Joey Feek (September 9, 1975 Alexandria IN– March 4, 2016 Alexandria IN)

Cause of death: Cervical cancer.

Country music singer and songwriter. From 2008 to 2016, the duo Joey + Rory comprised Joey and her husband, Rory Lee Feek. Joey and Rory Feek rose from unknowns to winners of the ACM Award for Top New Vocal Duo a few years back. But earlier this year, just as their album, “Hymns That Are Important to Us,” debuted at the top of the country charts, Joey lost a two-year battle with cancer. Anthony Mason talks with Rory about his loss, and about his new documentary, “To Joey, With Love.”

Phife Dawg born Malik Izaak Taylor (November 20, 1970 Queens NY– March 22, 2016 Contra Costa County, California).

Cause of Death: Complications from Diabetes.

He was a rapper and a member of the group A Tribe Called Quest. Let this tribute of 50 minutes get you throught the hip hop history.

MauriceMoeWhite (December 19, 1941 Memphis, TN– February 4, 2016 Los Angeles, CA)

Cause of death: Parkinson’s disease.

He was a singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, arranger and bandleader. He was the founder of the band Earth, Wind & Fire. Viola Beach (13 Feb 2016): Young British band Viola Beach plunged to their deaths by driving off an open bridge in Sweden on Saturday. The band was in the country on their first (and last) overseas gig which took place at the Where’s the Music? festival in Norrköping, Sweden. Four band members, plus their manager died: Kristian Leonard, 20; River Reeves, 19; Tomas Lowe, 27, Jack Dakin, 19; Craig Tarry, 32.

Sir George Henry Martin (3 January 1926 Highbury, UK – 8 March 2016 Wiltshire, UK)

Cause of death: In his sleep

Legendary producer his name has been associated with The Beatles, he died of old age in his sleep. The fifth Beatle was also arranger, composer, conductor, audio engineer and musician. Here is a 20 minute interview with the genius when he was 72, he went to live up to 90.

Francis WayneFrankSinatra Jr. (January 10, 1944 Jersey City, NJ – March 16, 2016 Daytona Beach, FL)

Cause of death: Cardiac Arrest.

He was the son of singer and actor Frank Sinatra and his first wife, Nancy Barbato Sinatra. He was a singer songwriter, composer and also an actor. A showman since his teens. Lets see this Family guy video with him singing.

Merle Ronald Haggard (April 6, 1937 Oildale, CA– April 6, 2016 Palo Cedro, CA)

Cause of death: Pneumonia.

A country music legend. He was was an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler and a reference to country with more than 50 albums including Gospel, Christmas, LIVE recordings. Here is an oldie of one of his hits.

LeandroGatoBarbieri (28 November 1932 Rosario Santa Fe Argentina– 2 April 2016 New York)

Cause of death: Pneumonia.

He was an Argentine jazz tenor saxophonist and composer who rose to fame during the free jazz movement in the 1960s and is known for his Latin jazz recordings of the 1970s His nickname, Gato, is Spanish for “cat. This is one of his best albums enjoy.

 

“Billy” Paul Williams (December 1, 1934 Philadelphia, PA – April 24, 2016 Blackwood, NJ)

Cause of death: Pancreatic cancer.

He was a Grammy Award-winning American soul singer, known for his 1972 #1 single, “Me and Mrs. Jones”, as well as the 1973 album and single “War of the Gods” which blends his more conventional pop, soul, and funk styles with electronic and psychedelic influences.

John Berry (May 31, 1963 New York, NY – died May 19, 2016 Danvers, MA)

Cause of death: Frontotemporal dementia or frontal lobe dementia.
