IN MEMORY OF AALIYAH
AALIYAH HAUGHTON * 16.01.1979- 25.08.2001+
Aaliyah was born on January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. When she was eleven years old she joined Gladys Knight's troup in Las Vegas. She was seen by Gladys when Aaliyah's uncle, Barry Hankerson invited Gladys, his ex-wife, to come over. She was then seen by record label representatives and got a record contract. On her first album, Age Ain't Nothing But a Number, R. Kelly produced her whole album. Her first two singles, "Back and Forth" and "At Your Best" both made the top ten on the Billboard Music Charts, and the album sold over a million copies after two months of its release. It was rumored that R. Kelly and her had married, but both denied it. In 1996 her second album, One in a Million, was released. The singles "One in a Million", "The One I Gave My Heart To", and "4 Page Letter" all became hits for her. In 1998, a song from the Dr. Doolittle Soundtrack broadened her success to pop fans, "Are You That Somebody" got her nominations for a Grammy Award, two Soul Train Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and an American Music Award. In 2000 she stared in her first movie, Romeo Must Die. "Try Again" became her biggest song, and got her nominations for a Grammy Award and two Soul Train Awards. She won two MTV Video Music Awards. In 2001 she released her single, "We Need a Resolution" in April, and her third album, self titled, in July. In mid-Summer of 2001 she rapped up filming of her second and third films, Queen of the Damned and The Matrix 2. She had also begun filming of The Matrix 3. In mid-August she took a flight to a small island in the Bahamas. She spent two days there, filming the music video for her single, "Rock the Boat". After shooting the video she and eight others boarded a flight out of the Bahamas. Producer/Collaborator Timbaland was supposed to go with her, but was layed over and stayed for a later flight. When the plane was loaded they took off. Only minutes after take-off the plane lost power in one engine, the captain lost control, and the plane crashed, only yards away from the end of the runway. Aaliyah and seven others were killed on impact. The ninth passenger, a label exec for Virgin Records, survived only to die in the hospital of injuries a day later. Her last album, which was gold before she died, has since gone platinum. The second single (the one she was in the Bahamas making the video for) has impacted radio stations and has posthumously became a hit song.
